The stripes trend has been very hot over the past few seasons, and I for one am thrilled about that fashion development! I am a huge fan of stripes, especially the black and white variety. While my favorite way of sporting this trend is in a tank or tee, striped dresses, skirts, and blazers are also plentiful in the shops this spring and as we move into summer. [Read more...]
What are you wearing mommy?
What are you wearing mommy?
Snickers from the crowd and not the kind you eat. You stop and wonder, “are they laughing at me?” And of course they don’t know that you are a mom, you’re running on 3 hours of sleep, the child just barfed all over you and the only thing clean in the car was your husband’s softball sweatshirt. Ugh. [Read more...]
Chambray the RIGHT way
Denim, denim everywhere but no idea how to rock it! This is the problem I’ve seen most recently from my best friends to our Urban Darling clients. They absolutely LOVE the look of the “new denim” shirt that’s been popping up everywhere but they aren’t sure if it’s the right look for them, and if it is how they can incorporate it into their everyday wardrobes. 5 Must-haves for your SPRING wardrobe
- A LWD (aka Little White Dress) – Nothing says spring has sprung better than a flowy, fluttery and totally effortless little white dress. Perfect for everything from nights on the town (add a blazer and pumps) to checking out the farmer’s market on a lazy Sunday with the hubby. Love the cut out versions that are just SO in right now.
- Printed denim- after seeing the floral printed denim available at Madewell in SF’s Westfield center and falling absolutely IN LOVE with about 15 pairs I realized these are definitely a must this season. Skinnies are available in just about every pattern from muted leopard print to bright floral and back again. Choose one that works for your style and keep the rest of the outfit neutral with a chunky scarf and crisp button-up or tee.
- An Aztec inspired maxi- I love the slew of Aztec-y prints that hit the runway for this season’s tops and dresses. I especially love the look of them on a nice fitted maxi-dress. If you’re going to let the dress do the talking pair with some fabulous sandals and a nice collar necklace.
- BANGLES, BANGLES and more BANGLES- who doesn’t love an arm full of bangles to get them feeling hippie chic? Not me that’s for sure and the MORE the better. Combo skinny and chunky bangles on both arms mixing metals, turquoise or stone and adding materials like rope or ribbon keeps the look young, fun and carefree- perfect for all your spring attire.
- A great side bag- I’m loving the look of slouchy accessories that continues to be a trend this season! Adding a great side bag is perfect for a fashionista on the go and a great leather piece is an investment that will last you long after the April showers and May flowers have disappeared.
Exotics for the Refined Taste
Cheetah, leopard, snakeskin. An adventurous fashonista wears the exotic print while grinning to her onlookers. And then there are people like me. Loving the exotic look from afar… For years. [Read more...]
In Appreciation of Old Favorites!
Happy April everyone! I know we’re all thinking about Spring fashion, but I just got back from a ski trip in Aspen where I got to wear a couple of old yet still relevant favorites of mine, which inspired me as the subject of this month’s newsletter entry.
As anyone reading this newsletter knows, one of the services that Urban Darling stylists offer is a closet audit. While of course that involves purging your closet of unused items of clothing and the holes in your wardrobe that need to be filled in in order to help you function optimally in your daily life and look your absolute best, whatever the occasion; it also involves assessing all the items you currently own and deciding which to keep year after year as your own classics.
I purchased the Norma Kamali sleeping bag coat pictured below some 25 years ago (guessing) when NK first introduced them. Mine is fully reversible, black or silver (although I rarely wear the silver side out). It has been the source of endless being made fun of by my family on ski/snow trips over the years; however, I continue to love the way it looks; not to mention that it weighs nothing, you can roll it into a tiny ball in your suitcase, and it never wrinkles. PLUS, while I was wearing it around town in Aspen I was stopped numerous times by both locals and visitors and told what an amazing coat it is – this in one of the most fashionable ski resorts in the world! My husband and my son just shook their head in wonder, and I couldn’t help but gloat.
The good news is you can still get a version of Norma Kamali’s sleeping bag coats; she recently reissued them, and there are a variety to choose from: Norma Kamali Collection.
Another old favorite are my black lace-up canvas heeled hiking boots by Stephane Kelian Studio, also about 25 years old; again, I get stopped and asked about these all the time and there are new versions coming out every year.
Here’s a close-up of the boot, and a photo of me in the boots, my Lucky skinny jeans (the only jeans I wear), navy Vince tunic sweater (hides vacation over-eating evils) and Jigsaw purse (excuse the squinting, it was blindingly bright out and I didn’t have my shades!):
Here are a few versions that are currently on sale:
Brody – by Coconuts @ Piperlime
Madeline Shotgun – Shoebuy.com
Gray Laceup High Heel Hiking Books – eBay
Wanted Comfy Brown High Heel Hiker Ankle Boots – Lulu’s
River Island Heeled Hiker Books – asos.com
Carvela Sundance Crepe Sole Hiking Boots – asos.com
Spring is a time for renewal (a good time to get your closet audit done!) but keep in mind your treasured classics that will continue to serve you well as your style continues to emerge and change.
With style and grace, Nicole
From the Desk of {a working mother}
“How to be a Successful Working Mother”. Well my darlings, that is something I would LOVE to master. However being a relatively new mom, I am still (as they say in the mommy world) ‘winging it.’ Full time mother work clocking in overtime on her mommy hours. [Read more...]
Spring Begins…
Spring is here and it’s the perfect time to revamp those New Year’s resolutions; which by now, for some, may have lost steam and already faded. Don’t feel bad. I’m almost positive you aren’t the only one. For me, I’ll be revamping my professional goal direction and will continue to try and keep a positive and calm mind, even when everything else around me continues taking crazy twists and turns. Also, sitting in the back of my mind is the thoughts of summer, and swimsuit season. Are you prepared? I’m not either. But, I plan to be and I’m already being proactive about it. I’ve started taking this all-natural supplement for my body, which I won’t speak about until I see how my body responds. All I know is I’m eating healthy and working out, and feeling quite good, to say the least. Which leads me to my last spring goal, which is to have a body I love more than I already do. Is that possible? Anything’s possible!
Besides my new goals, I can’t help but notice the entire wonderful ready-to-wear trends hitting the store shelves and window displays. They’ve inspired me to create some fun visuals for my ladies. If you’re inspired from reading my blog, maybe a goal of yours is to create an undergarment collection just as exciting as your wardrobe. If it is, here are some fun ways to integrate Spring/Summer trends with your intimates. Creating a look integrated with your foundation pieces that will literally have you feeling like the hottest chick on the planet! Enjoy!
